W. Muscott Tangerine

The W. Murcott tangerine (often called “Honey Tangerine” or marketed as Murcott) is a popular mid- to late-season citrus variety known for its rich sweetness, high juice content, and vibrant color. The fruit is typically medium-sized and slightly flattened, with a smooth, thin, glossy rind that ranges from deep orange to reddish-orange. While the peel is fairly easy to remove, it can be a bit tighter than looser-skinned mandarins like satsumas.

Internally, the flesh is a deep orange, tender, and very juicy, often containing multiple seeds—especially when grown near other citrus varieties due to cross-pollination. The flavor is its defining trait: intensely sweet with a honey-like richness, balanced by moderate acidity that gives it a full, bold citrus profile. This strong flavor is why it is frequently considered one of the best tasting tangerines for fresh consumption.

W. Murcott typically ripens from late winter into early spring, making it a valuable variety for extending the citrus season after earlier mandarins are finished. The fruit holds reasonably well on the tree but is generally harvested within a narrower window than some late varieties like Gold Nugget. Overall, the W. Murcott tangerine is prized for its exceptional taste, juiciness, and attractive appearance, making it a favorite in both home gardens and commercial citrus production.
