Contorted Jujube

The Contorted jujube, often referred to as the So jujube, is a unique and ornamental jujube variety prized as much for its architectural form as for its fruit. The tree is distinguished by its naturally twisted, zigzagging branches, which create strong visual interest year-round, particularly in winter when the tree is dormant. This striking growth habit makes it a popular choice for ornamental landscapes, bonsai, and accent plantings.

The fruit of the Contorted jujube is small to medium in size, round to slightly oval, and ripens from green to reddish-brown. Fresh fruit is crisp with a mild, pleasantly sweet flavor, becoming richer and chewier when dried. While the fruit is edible and productive, this variety is often selected primarily for its decorative appeal rather than heavy fruit production. Like other jujubes, the Contorted jujube is extremely drought tolerant, heat loving, and adaptable to a wide range of soils. It blooms late in spring, avoiding frost issues, and requires minimal maintenance, making it an excellent low-water, dual-purpose tree for arid and warm climates.
